Yorgos Karahalis was born in Athens, Greece, in 1966, where he lives up to now.
He started working as a photographer in 1987 as a co-founder of a small photo-agency. As a self-taught photojournalist, he managed to publish his work all over the Greek major newspapers and magazines, during the next 10 years. In 1996, he signed a contract with Reuters news agency and began working almost exclusively for Reuters. In 2007, Yorgos joined Reuters as a staff photographer based in Athens. During these years he covered almost all aspects of news photography, traveling to Portugal, Cyprus, Israel, Serbia, Albania and received training in photo-editing in Germany. His work has been published in the most significant publications around the world. He was awarded as the Greek photographer of the year by FujiFilm in 2000, and again in 2001 as the Greek Sports photographer of the year in the same competition.
He stopped working with Reuters in 2004, and since then he works on a freelance basis, with the majority of his assignments coming from the Associated Press and Bloomberg.
